PROYECTO HEARD - 101080161 (CERV)

On October 17th, the town of Mislata (Spain) hosted the final event of the HEARD project, an initiative dedicated to exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on democratic debate, fundamental rights, and women's lives through a gender-focused lens. The project, involving partners from nine European countries, seeks to measure the pandemic?s effect on democratic values, the rule of law, and human rights, with special attention to social rights. The event will not only mark the project?s culmination but also serve as a platform for sharing key findings, recommendations, and reflections on lessons learned.

Key Highlights of the Event

The final event in Mislata featured the presentation of significant project outputs, reflecting the collaboration between European partners:

  1. Launch Event & 3 Surveys
Using a bottom-up, social media-driven approach, the HEARD project conducted three surveys aimed at identifying critical societal issues during the COVID-19 crisis. These surveys captured grassroots insights into how democratic debate and social cohesion were affected during the pandemic.
  2. 3 Debate Panels
To promote social engagement and dialogue, the project organized three debate panels that tackled issues such as democratic erosion, human rights violations, and the gendered impact of the pandemic. These panels encouraged a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by different societal groups, particularly women.
  3. Topic-Based Group Discussions
Discussions between partners from different countries and professionals in democratic debate, human rights, and women's rights created a forum for exchanging insights on how the pandemic disrupted these fields. These dialogues fostered the generation of ideas for future improvement and resilience.

Presentation of Good and Bad Practices During the Pandemic

A major focus of the event was the presentation of both good and bad practices adopted by partner countries during the pandemic. This comparative analysis will highlight how different states responded to the challenges posed by COVID-19, focusing on the impact on democratic processes, the rule of law, and the protection of social and women's rights. By identifying both successes and failures, the project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pandemic's effects on governance and societal well-being.

Policy Recommendations

The event also served as a platform for presenting policy recommendations, developed through the collective efforts of the participating countries and stakeholders. These recommendations aim to guide policymakers in crafting more resilient and inclusive responses to future crises. The proposed policies focus on strengthening democratic values, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring that the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly women, are adequately addressed in times of crisis.

The final event in Mislata was a crucial moment for reflection and learning, as the HEARD project showcases the collaborative effort of nine European countries to address the lasting impact of COVID-19 on democratic life and human rights, while offering concrete strategies for the future.
